Just wondering which you folks are fond of using. I tend to call a downed animal "my kill" I hear fellows all the time on the hunting shows say, harvest, downed, taken....etc
When speaking to or describing your hunt to non hunters, do you candy coat it or do you tell them "I killed a XXXX with my bow"
I just wonder are we becoming a "secret society" in this world of political correctness?
Cheers,
Harley

Animals are killed, period. You can harvest grain crops, take your kids to the mall, or go hunting and kill an animal. That's about it.

I use "kill" plain and simple. I hate PC! I particularly hate the word "harvest" used in hunting. I am a predator in the woods like any other and I kill like any other and I see no reason to call it anything but what it is. Everybody kills: some of us are simply more comfortable doing it for ourselves while others are happier paying somebody else to do it for them out of sight. JMO

Awesome points of veiw fellas, that's exactly the stand point I have. I dont go in the bush to pic nic, I go to kill food.....period!!!
John and Jeff, I get dragged to the damn mall by my wife and my daughter......I'm the guy sitting on the bench pouting and looking pissed off......I hate malls, no good hunting store was ever put in a mall in all the places I've lived.

I don't like harvest either, but when you "KILL" something, it sounds sinister to me.
Here's the common dialog here:
"Did you get anything?"
"Yeah, I got a suntan."

I use kill - never been one for euphemisms - also dislike when people say someone "passed away" or that someone "expired" - people do not "pass away" they die - and library cards expire - not people!
Say what you mean and mean what you say is sort of how I feel.

Our mall has a sporting goods store!! Dick's Sporting Goods! When I get "dragged" to the mall, I go to Dick's and spend money we don't have on stuff I do not need to go out and KILL something with! :-) Then I go to Barnes and Noble and read books and magazines about stuff I want to KILL! I would like to KILL the mall actually ! Do you think 8 grains per pound is enough arrow to kill a mall? :-)

Think about it, on most hunting videos they are actually harvesting an animal because they are specially grown on deer farms or ranches just like other crops.

When talking to hunters, I use the word kill. When talking to non-hunters, I use the word harvest; not to sugar coat, but to educate. Remember, we are ambassadors; not of a sport, but of an occupation we are so passionate about.
My wife is a teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District and at times I find myself at social events with her co-workers in attendance as well. Now, they’re all fine people, but an extremely liberal group of Democrats they are. It doesn’t take long to strike a conversation about my latest exploits; fully aware that at any time someone will challenge me concerning the morals of hunting. I see it as an opportunity to faithfully and respectfully represent my passion and practice of hunting, fishing, and hiking in the great outdoors. Keeping in mind that most of these people have never step foot in the woods and their only experience with animals is the petting zoo. Their awareness of prey, predator, and especially hunter is what Disney movies have forged in their heads.
So, as an ambassador for hunting, it is my obligation to re-educate those who have become so disconnected to the reality and importance of wildlife conservation.
I hunt with the intention to kill so I may harvest a renewable resource.

In my opinion these people are not stupid, and they know that animals are killed in order for us to eat them. The PC thing is out of control,so many things we cant say because of the possibility of upsetting someone. Its a form of control that is stifling our first amendment. In Canada its a gainst the law to express the "OPINION" that you do not think homosexuality is right.I also hear they want to pass similar laws here.

Speaking of croaked - did you hear about the little boy who asked his grandpa if he could make a sound like a frog. The grandpa said "sure, but why do you want me to do that" - the little boy replied: "Because grandma says as soon as you croak we are going to Florida!"

He's working on stifling freedom of speech, along with everything else, that goes along with a socialist agenda. So for those of you who are truly confused.. Just wait a little bit, and the Obama Administration of Socialist, Marxist, Communist Czars, will tell you EXACTLY what you can and cannot say. Born American, and Southern By the Grace of God! If we as hunters can't or won't understand, accept, and come to terms with what we are doing, how can we possibly expect non-hunters and anti-hunters to understand or accept what we do?
Crops are harvested, domestic livestock animals are slaughtered, and wild game animals are killed. PERIOD!
And I fully agree with everything Bowhunter wrote. Folks, BHO is the enemy.

If theres one thing that burns my backside, its the term politically correct!
This tool has been used in other countries to begin control of what the citizens say and how they think.Everyone of us should be able to express our opinion without anyone telling us we cannot because it may offend some group. In my opinion PC is a huge problem in this country.

If I don't connect, well, that's why its called "hunting" instead of "killing."
Speaking of blood, have y'all tried fresh, raw tenderloin chunks or backstrap chunks cut into bite sized pieces and drowned in soy sauce yet? If you like suhi, you will love this. Try it! YUMMMM!!!!!

Gilly,
This dish is best with fresh meat which has not been frozen.
Cut and trim back strap or tenderloin into smal chunks - 1/2" or so. Make sure you get all the hair, silverskin, and stringy stuff off.
Rinse meat in cold water. Place in a bowl.
Drown it in Soy sauce. Add a little Olive Oil and your favorite seasoning to taste.
Stir it all up and place in the fridge for 30 minutes or so.
Pull it back out, stir it up, and dig in.
JJJ - Understood! I always say a bad day hunting trumps a good day at work every single time!!

I usually say before I find an animal,I shot a nice buck, which is followed by I found him. However, I believe the actual correct terminology is harvest. Harvest implies that the resource is renewable and the purpose consumption. Since deer are a resource that is managed by Fish and Wildlife, deer are by definition harvested. Also, when hunting, you are hunting for food, you are not allowed to let a deer lie after it is harvested, you also must make every attempt to retrieve the body. This differs from nuisance permits which can require that youleave the animal, which would be by definition killing. So in summary the proper term when abiding by game laws and retrieving an animal for consumption is hunting. Senseless shooting or removal of deer would be killing. I don't care either way, if I speak to someone after I have found an animal I may say I got one. My mother asks me if I caught any too. lol

Harvest is a euphemism for what is actually happening - we are killing the deer.
The term harvest until relatively recently was never used to describe the killing of animals - and in many dictionaries you will not even find a definition of "harvest" that would even imply that it could be used for animals - though in some you will find it applied to commercial fishing.
I don't think that beef cattle farmers refer to the slaughter as a harvest - but who knows - maybe now they do to try and satisify the animal rights folks.
Call it what you want - I'll call it what it is - not a fan of euphemisms - say what you mean and mean what you say
