My son has stuff-itus and carries a huge back pack with his new compound bow. I tend to go light. He killed a 6pt buck on the 10th when I was up north dirt biking--made me proud because he took care of it all by himself. Also shot it within a step of where he shot one with his muzzleloader last year. Anyway, he carries all kinds of stuff with him--noise makers, binocs, knives, magazines, homework (good thing!), and I am not sure what else. His pack weighs a ton and he is only 300 yards from the house or vehicle if that.

What do you carry for short hunts not too far from your vehicle, house or base camp?

I tend to dress for the wx, take a knife and flashlight on my belt; neck knife, whistle and lens cloth on a neck lanyard; small folding saw and pruners in my pocket; binocs on my neck; my bow with bow quiver. In a plastic bag in a cargo pocket--a few vinyl gloves, some paper towels and toilet paper, along with a stringer and extra string, and a Bic lighter. Snacks such as granola bars and jerky, hard candies in another bag. I also carry a small square of black plastic to kneel or sit on wet ground. My journal is also in a ziplock baggy with a pen.

For longer hunts/hikes and half day to full day still hunts--my Badlands Monster fanny with hydro system option carries some extra stuff and comfort items like a folding stool, poncho, ghillie vest, and more food.

For hunting up--MANDATORY FULL BODY HARNESS WITH FALL ARREST SYSTEM!

I get a bad case of "stuff-itus" every time a new Cabela's catalog comes to my mail box! I can't beleive all the "stuff" that is out there for "bow hunters" that we are supposed to have!

Half the stuff we dont need, but if one can afford to lose some money from time to time it can be fun to get new stuff.I then tend to give it away to a friend :)

bow, GFA quiver (old 5/7 Black widow quiver converted), haversack with water, baby wipes ,knife, flashlight , snacks, pruner, drag and at boy cussion. Try to stay minimal; If close or short hunt just what I can carry in my pockets. Try to keep it simple.

I agree with you Andy Man--on the pockets! Also the wipes--I use the ones they give you with BBQ ribs! I also carry a cravat, a couple of guaze pads, and some band-aids. If it doesn't fit in my pockets--I don't bring it on a short trip/hunt.

Forgot to add however if I am taking my big digital Canon and a lens or two, I will take them in my CC Filson medium field bag for that more traditional look. Awesome shoulder bag! It does seem however that when I lug that camera out, I don't see many deer!

I don't take much, I never have. Just a couple calls, flashlight, knife, and maybe some rattling antlers if the time warrants. I hunt really close to home though.

I carry a back quiver by Rod Jenkins. In it is a spare string, bowstringer, pen, pocket knife, tow rope, 2 bow hooks, and my headlamp. When video taping I put the camera in my pocket and put the camera arm over my shoulder.

Are you carrying essentials or gadgets?

I guess each of us would have our own definition of that.

What I carry depends on where I am going and how long I will be out.

Many of us out West will easily spend all day (or a few days) in the mountains and be far from camp. It's a good thing to be prepared for emergencies, such as bad weather, accidents, etc.

How about a drop camp in Alaska? You will learn lots about yourself and equipment.

A watch, a cell phone, map & compass if I need it, raingear, extra string and stringer, two knives, survey tape, some fire starting equipment some jerky, water and an EAS RTD. Not much really. Now a hike in backcountry hunt, that's different.

I have a camel back camo hydration pack with I shoe gooed my cat quiver to the side. I carry 5 arrows, 3 with broadheads, and 2 with judos for chickens and rabbits.

Inside I have a small bone saw for the breast bone and pelvis, a head light, Cell phone Garmin GPS, a roll of TP in a ziplock bag that I squish flat, a knife and snacks.

Not cumbersome at all and everything in it, I use.

I really should throw in some first aid stuff.

I've posted a photo of the one pack I made using 2 packs o the widow photobucket.

Too many time I have been in the timber wishing I had a piece of gear that I choose not to bring with me. Years ago I started carrying a pack that has everything I need to stay out in an emergency situation for 48 hours. The pack only weighs 13 lbs with all the gear and provides me with the peace of mind needed when hunting the mountains in colder climates. In addition to this and the clothing, I carry a 10mm glock, binos and on scouting trips a spotting scope. It can get cold up here in the Black Hills.

2 compasses, map, Randall knife, sharpening steel, TP in zip lock bag. PLV takedown 4 axis arrows with 160 grizzlys on the pointy end.Dryer lint loaded with vasaline in a plastic film container and a tube of matches. Used to take food but just ate it in the first hour of hunt so now I just go hungry for a day or two. FRJ

I just wear a small fanny pack with an extra knife, a few band aids, clippers, small folding saw, small flashlight, extra shooting glove, plastic bag with TP, pen, carcass tags, and rubber gloves. A boyscout compass, drag rope and small binoculars.

If its during the rut, and I'm going to sit all day, I'll take a larger pack with a couple of sandwiches and a drink.

I like to stay out all day, so I will pack for an all day excursion. I even take a packable fishing rod and small tackle box. My pack with bow and arrows weighs about 20 pounds or so. I try to stay light, but I also want to be prepared for most anything, which is kinda hard. I do want to be comfortable though, I spent most of my life in the woods carrying a ton of useless stuff around for the Army, so now when I go for leisure time and hunting, I try to be comfortable. I have added nap time to my list of things to take to the woods and that really helps!

I try to have all my "stuff" in "one spot" so I don't have to search for it at the house and therefore I don't forget it..just grab and go, all my stuff is ready.

When tree stand hunting, I use a field shoulder bag (army surplus). I use it to also hold my screw in tree steps.

Or, its in a bag that slips over my leather cartrige/gun-belt (its a very thick, 2" wide Bianchi belt).

1. Canteen 2. Belt knife 3. Surveyors Tape 4. Compass 5. GPS 6. Binoculars 7. TP (saves on underwear) 8. Gloves 9. Neck gator 10. Headnet 11. Camo paint (sometimes) 12. Headlamp 13. latex gloves 14. When stalking, a "cusion" slung like a field bag from string over my neck/shoulder. 15. 15-20 feet or so of "cord" that I use to sling jacket over my shoulder when stalking and too hot!

I have them, but never use the day pack/back-packs; conflicts with the tree stand if I use it and I don't like swapping all the stuff out. Mostly I dislike having to take it off everytime to get something out.

I haven't killed a thing this year...I have yet to see a deer (which unfortunately isn't that unusual in the N. GA mountains where I hunt). The unusual thing this year is that almost every time out I have seen one or more black bears! I was still hunting all day Saturday and had a decent bear (250lbs plus or minus 50lbs) come by me but he didn't give me anytime to verify no cubs. Second bear for the day (at 1:30 pm) came by me at 10 yards! And of course, I had my .45-70 instead of my Black Widow. Dangit! Had I had the Widow, that would have been a dead bear. But, that close it was too easy. He was beutiful, but not much bigger than my 110 lb German Shepherd. He was so close, I didn't have to "ground check him" to tell his size...He was on a mission, waddle on past, and for some crazy reason he never saw or smelled me, he caught me in mid-stride when he busted out of the mountain laurel on a mountain side so steep I was grabbing trees to get up.

SIG,one of my favorite pistols, along with my H&K tactical.

From: Graysquirrel
Date: 25-Oct-09

slick, I got an H&K tactical in 9mm. It stays in my truck at ALL times. Normally I carry a sig in 9mm unless I'm in the woods and then it's the 45.

All of them are darn accurate and easy to shoot and hit what you want.

From: Slickheadhunter
Date: 25-Oct-09

Mine are all 45's and I carry at all times outside of work. They are extremely accurate.Sig has a new one they just came out with,it has a polymer frame and is modular. The whole inner works come out all in one piece.I havnt seen one first hand but saw an article on them.

From: Graysquirrel
Date: 26-Oct-09

I've seen and held one. It was in 40 cal. Same basic configuration as the sig 2022 wich is the 9mm I carry most of the time. Good idea cause you have the basic frame and for 1/3 the price you can get a 9mm barrell, or 357sig barrell and associated clips and have 3 different pistols with the same grip and sight picture.

I used to use a fanny pack for all day hunts. But, if I spent the most of the day on the ground it would get somewhat uncomfortable. This year I switched to a badlands backpack. Its overkill for the amount of stuff I carry, but it sure is comfortable. It also slides through brush better than I ever figured it would.

Since using the pack, I added a first aid kit in a zip-lock. Im lucky I haven't needed it in the past. I also added a foam pad. Stumps and treestands seem to be getting harder each year I hunt.

I always have my cell phone in my pants pocket, but have started turning it off when hunting. I had it set on vibrate when hunting a couple of weeks ago and the darned thing went off when a spike buck was under me. It's amazing how something that I thought was quiet can sound like a jackhammer when that close to a deer! He heard it, but didn't spook. I'll bet that an older deer would have been gone.

One thing I would suggest/recommend you fellas get is a good headlight. I just bought a PETZL LED that blasts out 65 lumens of light, super bright white light that makes blood stand out great, supper small and light weight and once again bright, Makes gutting by yourself nice because it's on your forehead looking where you are.

My two cents.

Cheers,

Harley

From: Rom120

I use a surefire for blood trailing and a led light that clips on the bill of your hat for gutting. I've heard that the petzls are really nice. I could probably eliminate the flashlight if they are that bright.

Graysquirrel, Im afraid If I hold one I will end up leaving with it!The Sig plant is here in NH and they have been hiring like mad.

From: Graysquirrel
Date: 26-Oct-09

Well Slick, I had the willpower to put it down. (because I dislike a 40 cal a lot) But then again I already have 2 Sigs in 9mm, 1 in 45acp and a 9 H&K.

Kinda of nice having that plant so close, kinda like living within 5 hours of the Black Widow place. Can be awful painful in the left cheek pocket at times though.

Wow--some of you guys with side arms! You get "cull permits" for Central Park in NYC?

I can understand about packing in alot of stuff you hope you never need when venturing forth for a day or more in the mountains--but what do you absolutely must carry when say hunting within a half mile of your home or vehicle for the morning, afternoon or even whole day.

Often I go out for unproductive still-hunts with just bow, bow quiver, a knife, binocs, and pruners. In a zip baggy, some band aids, TP, a few paper towels, a couple of wet-wipes, a disposable lighter, some vinyl gloves. Maybe some jerky, an apple and a small water bottle in my pocket. I get internet on my Blackberry, so I carry that as well, plus it has a basic camera. I'll carry my Canon 40D DSLR with a 70-200 f2.8 and a 1.4x mulitplier on nice days sometimes. But that's it. All but the bow and camera has to fit in pockets.

From: Graysquirrel
Date: 26-Oct-09

One Tracker in this day and age of nonsense I unfortunately think it is better to be prepared for the worst and be thankful for anything better than that.

All stuff I carry will fit into a general fannypack with room to spare. Water and something to nibble on to eat should be standard because you never know when you need that either.
