A few years ago I built a osage bamboo backed bow from a stave I got from John Strunk. I backed it with snakeskin and used an elks tooth for an arrow rest and ibex horn for bow tips. It actually came out real well but being hung up on Widows I put it on the wall and haven't really even looked at it until a few days ago when a fellow that I'm teaching a little about trad archery asked about it. I decided to take it down and see what arrows it likes. Much to my chagrin it likes Axis 500 with 250 gr up front. Question is: Is it a sin to shoot carbon off a self bow? Or should I get some woodies and tune them to shoot? By the way this thing put three of the Axis's into a bunch at 20 yards where all 3 arrows were touching each other. Other groups though not quite as good still stayed well inside 5". FRJ

Goals & satisfaction will always be measured and appreciated from within. Only you can decide what's most rewarding for you in the big scheme of things. Interesting question regarding Sin. Sin really boils down to a heart issue in rebellion towards God. Similarities exist when our goals seek the approval of man, and not the purity of heart that God desires. May "your" goals be "your" goals and your actions be honoring to God.
Side note: I caught the funny "chagrin" statement AND I expect no "Voodoo" kickback from using carbons with your self-bow. Just a more consistent, durable, and accurate shot for approximately 10000 arrows...That's supposed to be funny.

KAZ, That has to be one of the best posts that I have ever read! Well done. Can I holler amen from the front row? :-)
FRJ, Post a pic of that bow on the photobucket. (or email it to me) Id love to see it. It may not be a Widow, but cool is cool.

I guess if you are trying to stay as "purist" as possible you probably would shoot wood, but you'd probably also wear buckskin instead of realtree goretex. I shoot whatever works best for me, and that's why I switched to carbon a few years ago. I decided that traditional archery has enough variables that made my accuracy and consistancy go all over the map.....for me anyways.......that I decided to use everything I could that was going to take these variables out of the picture for me. I have a spine tester but I had a heck of a time getting arrows to fly the same each time.
Now that I switched to carbon, everytime I miss, or mess up, it's 100% me, so I know right then and there what I have to fix.
My two cents.
Cheers,
Harley

I would shoot wood off a self bow, I would probably shoot wood off a longbow for that matter. I shoot carbons out of my Max's.

Actually, you ought to make up a set of river cane with wild turkey feathers and stone points if you are burdened by the sin of carbons, just frequent the confession booth and shoot carbon until they are done and light a candle for me because I'm shooting a whole lot of carbon these days. Much as I love footed wood, carbon is straight, fast and easy to build.

I shoot the arrows that perform the best off of any bow I am shooting, and the one that gives me the best possible chance of a good quick clean kill.
Anything deviating from that is what I would consider a sin.

This isn't going to be my go to bow or even used very much.I just had to build a bow so I did. I ordered a sample pack from surewood shafts yesterday and being only slightly retarded will play with them till I find the right combo. Then I'll hang it on the wall with my other bows that are not Widows and go back to shooting carbons off my Widows with a clean concious and no sin on my heart. Now that I think about it I may as well make a deer or elk skin quiver for it also. KAZ again your comments are great and the whole thing was supposed to have some humor in it. Have a great day guys. If you have sinned, then I am lost! I shot a carbon arrow out of a self bow made with stone tools by a tribesman in Papa New Guinea!! It is a black palm wood one piece bow with no string notches cut in the end; the string just slips over the ends and snugs at the big part. Oh yeah, the string I put on it was dacron too!!! That has to be sacrilege!! :-)

markd, sounds like a very serious "sin" and for your penance I recommend that you make a dozen wood arrows 4 fletched of a poundage yet to be determined and send them to me so that I can help in your forgiveness. I'll pay the shipping. FRJ

As long as you shoot them into a bottomless swamp it should be fine. :)
