Just wondering what is causing arm slap all of a sudden for me? Could it be the way that I am holding the bow or over drawing?

Too short a brace heigth? Way you are gripping or holding your bow?

cnorth, I'd have to agree with "trad". If it's all of the sudden, you may have string stretch and a lower brace height. That'll do it! If brace height is good then yes, it's most likely over gripping the bow OR real straight bow arm & heavy on the heal. More details on "All of the sudden" might help the analysis. What if anything else changed?

Make sure you're not twisting the string, e.g., canting the bow and not canting your draw fingers/anchor point. Upon release a twisted string will not go forward in a straight line. This can also causes erratic arrow flight.

May also have to open your stance some.

BH is 8 7/8. It may be my grip though. I have been playing around with the grip. What is the correct way to grip a recruve??

There is a really good segment on grip on Maters of the Barebow 3. "Let the bow tell you." I have always dreaded the off season. (the time between baseball and hunting) However, I'm looking forward to it this year. I've got some work to do.

cnorth, Brace Height is "ruled out", that should not be your issue at 8 7/8. What bow are you shooting? I shoot an older HS Model which is more towards the "Higher Wrist" style of grip. The longbows & PSR seem to have a more medium to low wrist grip. So, I start with the premise that my draw arm elbow has a slight "clockwise rotation" in it without changing hand orientation. This already provides some clearance from the string. Next, I seat the index finger/thumb pocket deep in to the grip to get solid contact with the heel bone, while NOT breaking the wrist/alignment. I do not heal down, I keep it all high-wrist-straight. Finally I do not grip heavy, but I do bring my finger tips back bent and hold the bow. I do know the whole alignment, grip, etc.. needs to be firm, consistent, and not mushy/too relaxed. I shoot a clicker and I KNOW when things get too relaxed and mushy. Nice firm push-pull, solid alignment from draw elbow straight back with tension on release. You might have someone watch or video you on release to see what the bow is doing on release which would give you some indications. I don't know if I explained anything well enough to help, but I do not experience any kind of string slap, certainly don't NEED an armguard and haven't experienced issues with my hunting weight clothes either. If you can bareshaft shoot consistently, it may not even be with your grip, could be stance, or can't, or draw length inconsistencies. Glad to help if you have more details, questions, or follow-up.

another possibility is that you are not slightly bending your bow arm elbow - also the position of your feet can effect this too.

Kaz, I am shooting a PMA. Thanks for the info, I believe that I may be too straight with bow arm..

I have never struck my arm with a string, slight bend in the elbow should do it!

generally can shoot with no arm guard with the recurves but noted arm slap whan shooting very tired and let my bow arm straighten out- generally have a slight bend to my elebow and elbow slightly rotated out

Open your stance up rather than pose like an Olympic target archer using sites. By this I mean stand square facing the target. For a LH shbooter-put your right foot just a tad ahead od your left foot. Bend your knees slightly. While keeping a straight bow arm begin to draw raising your bow arm and at the same time rotate your upper body while canting the bow some, coming to anchor. When I shoot this way (the way I self-taught with the help of Asbel's books) I end up with a more "square" upper body (to the target). No string slap at all. With just a small amount of movement of my right foot and slight rotation above my waist I can get a lot of coverage on a tree stand. GFA had an article in TBH mag a few issues ago about this "open" stance and upper body "rotation". When I read it I was surprised that it wwas the same description of the way I had to begun to shoot. My son usually slaps his arm the first few shoots standing sideways like he does with his compound. I'm no expert but it works for me!
