I waffle back and forth on using attractant scents. I wonder whether I am just wasting money (sucked into the commercialism) and even scaring off deer.

What have you seen or experienced?

BTW, the rut has just started here. My neighbor got 192 10 pointer today nose to the ground!

Last year I bought a bottle of Code Blue estrous gel. I put gobs of it in a semi circle about 30 yards from my blind. after sitting for 2 hours or so, 6 muley does came trotting past my stand about 40 yards out, never stopping. A couple minutes later a nice 4x4 muley buck came trotting down the same trail the does did, he stopped, and walked right toward my blind, nose down showing off his gums. He came to withing 25 yards of my blind and as he turned, I hit him with my 300 WM T/C Encore.

Now my thought is that this estrous attractent stopped this buck from chasing does and got his attention and brought him into to my site.

I let go buck bomb at my stand 3 weeks ago, pre-rut, and to that point I had a 4x4 WT and several small spikers coming to my stand, a couple days after the buck bomb I started getting more bucks coming to my stand, all on my trail cam. they were not there before the bomb so I think the scent got them curious and brought them in from somewhere else.

The Muley buck from last year is on the widow photobucket about 5 pages in.

Cheers,

Harley

Ive had them come in nose down on my scent trail that I put down, also have friends that have had the same thing happen.More often Ive had absolutely nothing happen.

Sometimes they spook em', sometimes they work & sometimes nothing happens at all. John Collins of "James Valley Scents" puts out what is probably the most informative comprehensive brochure on the methodolgy of scent usage I've read in 30 years!

I personally have never had luck with scents - but my brother said that of all the scents he has tried that the only one that he ever had a deer come too was that Code Blue as well - he said that that stuff seems to work if a deer is in the area.

my scent is a gallon or two of apples in front of my blind hoping that they will bring in a doe in heat.

Tried some Doe in eustrus once got no effects, except when I put some on the porch and my dog sniffed it and peed on it.

Great thread. I have tried a lot of scents, even this week. This is what I have seen. Just this morning I had put out Whitetail Maniac and two spikes walked by without even paying attention to it. Saturday I put out Tinks 69, 6 bucks walk by, 4 of which were chasing does two of which were looking for does, all passed by without even approaching the scent. Last week, tinks 69, multiple bucks with their noses to the ground passed by within 10 yards and didn't even stop. Last year, put out code blue scent drag, an 8 pointer and a 5 pointer encountered the scent, and started back pedaling. These are all very bad results. I did buy some local stuff that came in a bottle and just had an orange sticker on it, and I had a 4 pointer follow it right to me. My friend swears by James Valley, said it has worked dozens of times, but always on spikes and 4 pointers, little bucks. I have yet to kill a big buck with scent out. I have killed big bucks as the result of grunting with the Primos Rubber Neck.

Sometimes it works, but you gotta know when to use it.

Usually, if you're seeing no rut activity, and use it anyway, it will scare the deer off, but if you have seen some rut activity, it can be very effective.

At the right time - Combine the scent with a decoy strategically positioned, and you'll be amazed at the outcome.

Like I said though - it don't work all the time, and you gotta use your head as to when to put it out.

I use either Golden Estrus or Code Blue very sparingly and during this week only. I keep it in a foodsaver vacuum bag and reseal it after each use, reason being is that I put it in front of the heat vents in the truck the last 5-8 miles that I drive. There's no way I want to take a chance of that getting out inside my truck. I dip a scent wick and hang at the right height according to the wind. I seldom use more than two wicks and keep them usually upwind of my location where I can just see them and I never do a drag. Last year I arrowed a decent buck as he came in looking for the scent wick quartering the wind like a bird dog, I've had lots of does come to investigate them as well. I think that using too much and using it at the wrong times are the problems that most people have. Estrus scent is something I will use if I know there's a good buck around but can't get a look at him any other way, mainly to stretch a nocturnal buck into a few minutes of early daylight.

Thanks for the input.

I got some Code Blue Estrus that I might be trying this week. I'll let you know.

I did have some luck pulling in two bucks with a Doe in Heat Bleat can last Sunday.

The long can bleat goes well with just a little scent. Ida is supposed to blow out today and we'll be back on it.

Heres another trick I learned some years ago where using scents are concerned.

Leading up to the trick takes a little explanation, so here goes -

Deer from different areas smell different, usually way different to each other. Ideally it would be best to use scents collected from deer in the immediate area where you hunt, but since that isn't handily done, we buy scents off the shelf. When I kill a doe, especially if I am pretty sure it is an estrous doe, I save the contents of the bladder, and use it for that season, and only that season, but I digress.

Many times these scents we buy are so strong that the deer are wary of it, instead of being attracted to it.

There is no telling where these scents come from, and even though they produce the overall deer smell, it isn't the smell the deer in your area are used to.

So heres the trick - before putting the scent out, cut it with a natural water - well water, spring water, any water that contains no chlorine, and has not been processed.

Mix it about 50/50, and then use it sparingly. It doesn't change the smell but it weakens it enough that instead of spooking the deer, it achieves the attractant effect it is intended for.

I started using scents many years ago, and until I started using the above trick, I was spooking the deer way more often than attracting them. Once I started cutting the scent, my success rate using it went up dramatically.

Another up side to it is - you get two bottles for the price of one. 8^)

Thanks. I think I'll give it a try.

I belive in using sents!!i have had sucess with them, But it has to be the right time of year. i do not use sents in the early part of the season . Where i hunt is in the southern part of tennessee right on the alabama line. Our bucks start chasing the last week in november thru the fist week of december. this is the week i start using them.

the past three years i have killed a buck the last weekend in novermber using sents.

I use Team Fitsgerald Deer Dander and spray on a drag and walk to my stand. it smells like a rutting bucks tarsal glands. killed a 8 pt and a 10 point . both bucks came in with their nose to the ground shot them a both at less than 5 steps. i love that stuff.

never had luck with doe pee

3 years ago my dad and i bought some Tinks Sent Sticks to try them out. he had a buddy that swore by them. we both killed a 8 pt the first time we used them on the smae day. i felt really stupid lighting that sucker in the woods and watching a stream of smoke go throught the air. it stinks up everything. but it worked!!
